Roland TD-30KV vs TD-30K Review

Electronic drum kits are superior to their acoustic counterparts in terms of versatility, and many times, in sound. Although they are a much larger investment, a top quality electronic setup is more than worth it if you are a serious musician.

For years, the Roland TD-20KX was the top of the line. But now there are two new challengers to its fame. Let’s take a look at the TD-30K and TD-30KV kits to see which one will be the best for you.

Roland TD-30K V-Pro Series Electronic Drum Kit

The Roland TD-30K and the TD-30KV have the same sound module with Roland’s SuperNATURAL technology. This software changes the tone and volume according to how you play just like an acoustic drum set would. The Behavior Modeling software adds to the authentic sound and feel. When you hit the cymbal, it sounds and feels like you hit a real metal cymbal. When you perform a buzz roll or rimshot, it feels and sounds realistic.

As you play the TD-30K, it is sensitive enough to reflect your individual style and technique. You can customize it just the way you want by changing the tension on the pads, mounting the pads in various ways, and adjusting the sound. The sound module has 20 extra slots for kits you program yourself with over 1000 different instruments. Plus, with the USB and MIDI port, you can add your own mp3 or WAV tracks to play along.

This Roland drum kit is light years ahead of a Rock Band setup. Ever banged on those drums? When you strike the mesh pads on the TD-30K, you can feel and hear the difference between the head and rim on toms, snare, and cymbals.

Each of the 10-inch mesh head V-pads for the toms lets you create a dual-mount. The frame of the kit is made for easy setup and teardown, as well as flexibility in how you mount the pads. The 12-inch V-Kick Trigger Pad is compatible with double bass pedals. It can also be adjusted to just the right tension for how you play.

If the TD-30K is so amazing, why would you consider paying more for the TD-30KV? The TD-30KV has the new VH-13 floating hi-hat trigger instead of the VH11. We’ll take a closer look at the whole setup below.

As we mentioned, the TD-30KV has the new VH-13 floating hi-hat. This means increased sensitivity so you get the most out of the TD-30 sound module. Plus, the pads are larger on the TD-30KV, and there is an additional tom and cymbal crash. The kick pad alone is 14-inches in diameter.

Like the kick pad on the TD-30K, this one has support for double pedals although no pedal is included in the box. All the pads have the dual-triggering technology that lets you enjoy playing rimshots and choking the crash just as if you were playing an acoustic set. When you’re on the TD-30KV, it feels and sounds authentic.

The stand is finished in chrome instead of mostly black like the TD-30K. The clamps and fittings are metal, not plastic. This kit doesn’t come with a snare drum stand, hi-hat stand, or kick pedal either.

With the fine quality TD-30 sound module, you’ll have over 1,000 special effects and drum sounds. The SuperNATURAL and Behavior modeling software give the TD-30KV seriously realistic sound. As you play, your own technique and style shines.

Also in the sound module is the option to add room effects and microphone simulation with the Ambience fader. Add in your own effects or mp3 or WAV music tracks. You can program 20 kits yourself and have fun with the 80 pre-programmed ones. Finally, use the USB port to back up your hard work or transfer kits from another drum set.
